Once upon a time, in the rolling hills of Israel, there lived a young shepherd boy named David. Every day, David watched over his father's sheep, playing his harp and singing songs to God under the starry sky.
David wasn't the biggest or strongest boy, but he had something more powerful than muscles – he had unshakeable faith in God. When lions and bears tried to steal his sheep, David trusted God to help him protect his flock, and God always did.
One day, David's father asked him to take food to his older brothers who were soldiers in King Saul's army. When David arrived at the battlefield, he heard a terrible roaring voice that made all the soldiers tremble with fear.
"I am Goliath!" boomed the voice. "Send someone to fight me! If he wins, we'll be your servants. But if I win, you'll serve us!"
David looked up and saw the most enormous man he'd ever seen. Goliath was over nine feet tall, covered in heavy armor, and carrying a spear as big as a tree trunk. For forty days, this giant had been challenging the Israelites, and no one was brave enough to face him.
But David's heart burned with courage. "This giant is making fun of God's people!" he said. "Someone should fight him!"
The soldiers laughed. "You're just a boy with a slingshot!" they said.
But King Saul heard about David's courage and called for him. "You can't fight Goliath," the king said kindly. "You're too young, and he's a warrior."
David replied with confidence, "When lions and bears attacked my sheep, God helped me defeat them. This giant is no different. God will help me now too!"
King Saul was amazed by David's faith. He offered David his own armor, but it was too big and heavy. Instead, David chose his simple slingshot and picked up five smooth stones from a nearby stream.
As David walked toward Goliath, the giant laughed mockingly. "Are you kidding me? They send a little boy with a stick?"
But David called out boldly, "You come to me with sword and spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord! Today, everyone will know that God doesn't need swords and spears to save His people!"
Goliath charged forward with a roar. David ran toward him, placed a stone in his slingshot, and with perfect aim guided by God, sent it flying. The stone struck Goliath right in the forehead, and the mighty giant fell to the ground with a thunderous crash.
The enemy army fled in terror, and the Israelites cheered with joy! David had won not because he was big or strong, but because he trusted in God's power.
That night, as David looked up at the same stars he'd watched as a shepherd, he thanked God for showing him that no problem is too big when we have faith. And from that day forward, everyone remembered the little shepherd boy who became a mighty king, not through his own strength, but through his trust in God.
As you close your eyes tonight, remember that God has given you courage too. No matter how big your challenges seem, God is always bigger, and He's always with you.
What we learn from this story
True courage comes from trusting in God, not from being the biggest or strongest. When we have faith, we can face any challenge.
